Carver Alumni Association
about us
In 2008, George Washington Carver Elementary School alumni and their families formed the Carver Alumni
Association as a non-profit organization. Black children from Hillsboro, Lincoln, Philomont, Round Hill,
Lovettsville, Hamilton, Purcellville, and Bluemont Virginia attended the school from 1948 to 1968. Following
desegregation, the school was used as a county storage facility for three decades because area white parents
refused to allow their children to attend a school that was formerly for Black children . The school is now used
as a senior center, after Mattie Louise Lassiter, Brownell.... organized local citizens to petition Loudoun County to use the
building to support the community.

The land on which the school sits upon was donated by Joseph and Lena Cook and was adjacent to the historic
Emancipation Grounds. Emancipation Proclamation Day celebrations were held on the Emancipation Grounds, every third Saturday in September between the years 1910-1967. The festivities commemorated the day that President Abraham
Lincoln proclaimed the end of slavery on September 22, 1862. The annual celebration was always a
spectacular event and people traveled from neighboring counties, tow ns, and cities to participate. The Carver
Alumni Association recently revived the celebration which is now held every year in September.

The Carver Alumni Association is committed to preserving the civic, educational, cultural, and religious
traditions established in Loudoun County and honoring the legacy of former students, teachers, faculty,
and those who came before them. The Carver Alumni Association also seeks to serve the community at large
and those directly connected to George Washington Carver Elementary School.
